Solar Power Lighting
Solar power lighting is a relatively new technology that has seen widespread use in the last ten years or so since the technology came down in price and began to be used for commercial purposes. Solar power relates to energy that is derived directly from the sun, and since this energy drives the climate and weather and supports virtually all life on
Earth it is often seen as a "clean" form of power that has many uses. Harnessing solar energy in fact dates from the from the time of the early Greeks who warmed their buildings by orienting them towards the sun, however modern techologies utilise solar cells that draw energy directly from the sun and turn it into electrical energy, this application is used in lighting. Solar photovoltaics provide 0.04% of the world's energy usage currently.
Within the field of lighting solar power has widespread applications. It allows lighting installations to be placed in locations that recieve sunlight during the day and they can power themselves during the darker hours at night meaning no mains power or cabling needs to be provided for the lighting to function, they can simply be placed and left to get on with their function of illuminating the area around themselves. Sign lighting also use this solar form of energy as the lighting itself is often low power and photovoltaic cells can only provide small amounts of charge.
